http://www.freddie-mercury.net/fred.gif
Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on Thursday September 5th 1946 on the small spice island of Zanzibar. His parents, Bomi and Jer Bulsara, were both Persian. His father, Bomi, was a civil servant, working as a High Court cashier for the British Government. Freddie's sister, Kashmira, was born in 1952. In 1954, at the age of eight, Freddie was shipped to St Peter's English boarding school in Panchgani, about fifty miles outside Bombay. It was there his friends began to call him Freddie, a name the family also adopted.

I always knew he was persian but had the impression that his name was
FEREYDOON MEYKHANI and then that became Freddie Mercury.

Freddie Mercury was not Persian meaning Iranian. He was a PARSI from Inida. Parsis are Indians of Persian origin ( 2000 years ago ,they migrated to India :) >>> http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/1112000.stm

Yes he was Parsi.
Parsis are Zoroastrians of Persian ascent who left Iran around the 9th century AD taking with them the eternal fire from the Istakhr temple, tired of the pressures and hardship given to them by the Arab-muslim rulers: they couldn't own their own land, they couldn't access gouvernamental positions, they couldn't even ride horses, they were threated as lower class citizens or sometimes heretics fire worshipers...!!
They are still proud of their Persian background and heritage. They speak an old Persian language actually.
Freddy Mercury was a brilliant artist regardless of his origin. Shame he had to leave us so soon...

I'm not trying to turn back the time, things happened in Iran and Iran changed and is no more the Iran of 2000 years ago like lot of other societies, but I think saying Parsi's aren't Persian isn't fair, since they are really keeping the Persian tradition and culture alive, which lot of other today Iranians probally forget! I think they deserve more respect from us, since I can imagine they had hard time keeping the culture and religion a live and always been a minority in a new society
