This actually works: When a dog is charging towards you you pretend to pick something (a rock) off the ground. I don't know what dogs think when the see humans in that position but it freezes them still.

So I would hold my ground, look the mental animal in the eyes, if there is a stick nearby I'd pick it up and kill the dog with it.
btw I HATE dogs. If they were human they'd be in mental hospitals.
